Avoiding the Plague: Cold & Flu Master Tonic

I said recently that I love this time of year but what I failed to mention is that I hate the sneezing and sniffling that comes with weather changes. And thanks to this random cold front in Texas, I’ve been having to take extra precaution against anything that would keep me from my desk. The second I started feeling yucky, I decided to whip up a cup of this magic potion that I’ve been hearing about. The master tonic includes garlic, onion, vinegar, ginger, horseradish, and lemon. According to a few sources this drink is antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic. Dr. Richard Schultz (the dude that made this stuff popular) claims that, “The fresh juices of organic horseradish root drive this formula to your head, sinus, throat and lungs, where you need it. The organic garlic juice and its next of kin, organic onion juice, are the two best herbs to flush micro-organisms from your body. The organic yellow ginger root juice and Habanero pepper stimulate your blood and lymphatic flow like no other herbs to get your immune cells to the bad guys, as fast as possible.” I never follow recipes exactly, so here’s what I did:

The Recipe: 

First, I used my power juicer to mix:

  • 3 inch piece of ginger root
  • 3-5 garlic cloves
  • 1 large organic lemon
  • 2 tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
  • Other recipes call for Habanero pepper, white onion and horseradish but…no. I just, no.

Then I poured the mixture into about 2 cups of warm water (to weaken the acidity). I know that none of these things sound appealing enough to drink, but there’s an explanation for the original ingredients.

The Reason: 

  • Pepper
    • Fights inflammation, clears mucus membranes, detoxifies, stimulates blood flow, protects and nourishes the heart; stimulates every organ quickly
  • Garlic Bulb
    • Kills bad bacteria, fungi and parasites, anti-carcinogenic
  • Onion
    • Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, supports digestion
  • Ginger
    • Anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, improves digestion
  • Horseradish Root
    • Anti-biotic, dissolves thick mucus, heats the body, brings blood to the brain

The Result: 

I’m from Louisiana so naturally I added more cayenne pepper than I needed to so the drink ended up being more spicy than soothing. At any rate, it actually worked. I’ve come across a few different variations of it, but most are fundamentally the same.
